Alaskan Luxury Cruise Discount Trips Offer Majesty For Less

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 6:26 am

Alaskan luxury cruise discount trips are the choice for many who want to see this outdoor paradise. Bringing the best of Alaska’s waters together with some incredible inland sights as well, cruises are considered one of the finest ways to view as much as possible in a short period of time.

To truly see all Alaska has to offer takes a lot more than a typical vacation can afford, but a luxury cruise is a fantastic way to get a good idea of what this rustic state has to offer. Providing both the comforts of a luxury liner and the rugged outdoor experience, cruises offer something for everyone. Plus, there are even considerations onboard for children, so every member of a family can have an absolute blast while taking in all Alaska has to offer.

For the casual sightseer who wants to enjoy creature comforts, the cruise life is the way to go. From the comfort of the deck, those on an Alaskan cruise can get in some whale watching, see other wildlife and appreciate incredible mountain and glacial views. Once the outdoors gets to be too much - if it ever does - a cruise provides live entertainment, nightclubs, fine dining and tons more to occupy time.

The outdoors types can also enjoy everything the casual sightseer will appreciate and more. Typical cruises offer day trips that can include fishing and hunting expeditions, sightseeing ventures and even helicopter excursions. There’s no reason to miss out on the outdoor adventures even on a cruise, just make sure the liner chosen has plenty of side trips in its itinerary.

For those who choose an Alaskan luxury cruise, the choice won’t disappoint. Typical cruises that sail Alaska run from seven to 14 days in length. They traverse two different paths that each offer their own sights, but both include some incredible glacier views and more.

The Inside Passage cruises generally run about a week in length. Generally stops include Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau. These stops couple with the sights along the way and side trips that make the experience incredible.

The Gulf of Alaska Cruise, also known as the Glacier Route Cruise, includes some serious sights. On this trip, cruise passengers can expect to see the College fjord and possibly Hubbard Glacier and more. Plus there are stops in major Alaskan ports of call as well.

Side trips on cruises can include hiking outside of Juneau through glacial lands, wildlife sightseeing aboard small, faster moving ships, dogsled rides, park junkets and more. Animals those aboard an Alaskan cruise can hope to see include bears, eagles, whales and even seals.

>From quaint fishing towns to incredible parkland excursions the days during an Alaskan cruise are filled with sights that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. At night, those seeking luxury will not be disappointed as cruises are known for pulling out the stops.

Those wishing to find discounts on cruises can find them if they shop around, book in advance and even check out group discounts. There are ways to see it all, enjoy it all and not pay a fortune.

Bamboo - More Than Just Poles

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 1:27 am

A brief overview of the many things that can be made of bamboo and it’s uses.

You can’t even begin to imagine how many uses there are for bamboo and how many things are made from bamboo.

For example. Did you know that some fishing flyrods are made from bamboo?

A gentleman by the name of Ward Dunham makes bamboo pens. He uses these for blackletter and other types of Gothic writing.

Bamboo is also used for making baskets. No, not all baskets are made of straw. Bamboo is quite commonly used in the making of baskets and it is quite strong.

How strong? There is a bridge in Bali that is made from bamboo. Certainly it would have to be strong to support a person or persons walking across.

In Denmark there is a company that makes bicycles out of bamboo.

TUBS Marine in Angeles City builds hybrid steel and bamboo boats and fishing sleds.

It is also possible to build bamboo housing. I don’t think anyone would want to be in one of these when a strong wind came around.

Bamboo fibers are also used to strengthen epoxy composites which is commonly used to strengthen concrete. Maybe that’s why our roads get potholes so easily.

Habu textiles uses bamboo in the making of yarn. The yarn is made by a process similar to the way rayon is made

A gentleman by the name of Omer Kursat uses bamboo to make what he calls “Artifacts of a One Man Tribe.”

A friend of mine who is a musician tells me that certain musical instruments are made of bamboo, most commonly the bamboo flute. It has a very different sound from the traditional metal flute. He describes it as being more airy and lighter sounding.

In Japan many traditional crafts including window blinds are made from bamboo.

There is quite a bit of furniture that is made out of bamboo. Another friend of mine has a bamboo made lawn chair. He tells me that it’s quite sturdy. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization has a number of articles on this.

A gentleman by the name of Christoph Tonges has a site that explains some of the bamboo construction techniques needed for making anything out of bamboo. Well, you didn’t just think they threw this stuff together did you?

A company in Germany by the name of Bamutec specializes in tools that are specifically developed for bamboo joinery.

I think you pretty much get the idea. Bamboo use is more common than most people realize. Just take a look at the things around you in your every day life. You’ll be surprised how much of it is made out of bamboo.

Arborvitae - Plants for The Danboro Pa. Area

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 5:36 pm

Whenever someone asks me for suggestions on EZ to plant trees and shrubs for the Dandoro Pa. area, I always begin with Arborvitae.

Arborvitae are commonly used evergreen shrubs or trees useful in urban areas where low maintenance and durability is needed. Many cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and buffers that are planted in rows. The form of arborvitae is small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach 50′, others only 3′. Most prefer full sun to partial sun. Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist , well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant. Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple remeady. Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow ,plant, and keep in shape.

The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size and quanity ordered.

Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color. We also have the American Arborvita known as “Tiny Tim”.This arborvita grows in zone 2 - 7. Its is a needled evergreen in the Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot to 1 foot tall. Its spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet. This is a plant that requires little work. Selecting quality arborvitae for the home landscape : When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlaped. Don’t buy any arbs bare rooted over 3′ tall. Any plant larger should be balled and burlaped.

We have thousands of arbs and always have hundreds ready for you to pickup. From 2′ to 15′ we have inventory balled and burlaped. Don’t worry about driving long distances to get to us. We are easy to get to near Phila., on a major road, Rt. 313 in Fountainville Pa.. We want to move our stock and will make sure that you go home a happy camper. If you are coming from a long distance, we will give away free inventory that is surplus to our needs. One of our fields is being converted into ball and soccer fields and work will begin Nov. 25 2005. Stock in this field will go cheap. We will stay open til the last dog dies or we sell out. I think we have more stock than what we possibly can sell. You can see our web sites at:

Plants For Establishing a Hedge in New Hope Pa.

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 10:18 pm

This article is designed to help New Hope Pa. residents select plants and shrubs for hedges. Not all plants that are suitable are listed here but most common and easy to raise ones are listed.

Hedges are one of the major components of your landscape. Hedges define the limits of your landscape and thus should be the starting point in your landscape design. Before selecting plants, you should carefully consider their landscape requirements and the characteristics of the plants. For example, deciduous plants drop their leaves in the fall and are effective screens mainly during the growing season. Evergreens provide good screening all year. Gardeners considering a sheared, formal hedge should realize that they may need to be pruned (sheared) several times a year to remain attractive. In comparison, an informal, natural hedge is relatively low maintenance. Select shrubs that grow to the desired height. Planting a tall-maturing shrub where a short, informal hedge is desired creates work. Many landscaping problems are prevented by selecting the correct planting material.

Our plants are well suited for many hedge plantings. We sell many types of plants and shrubs which can work well as a natural privacy boarder. Bare-root material is the most economical type of nursery stock when planting a hedge. However, bare-root plants are rather small. For the beginner, bare root is the hardest type of plant to grow out. Container-grown and balled and burlapped plants are larger, but are more expensive. You will have better luck with potted and B&B stock…The added cost will be worth it. Most B&B and potted stock can be planted whenever the ground is not frozen as long as you have the knowledge to help the plants along.

Plant spacing is determined by the plant species and hedge type. Most plantings will range from a spacing of a foot or two to a couple of feet. Many people will plant the shrubs and fail to prune them back hard. Pruning generally will make the shrubs more dense and compact.

The following is a list of shrubs suitable for hedges that we sell:

Amur maple Acer ginnala 15 to 18 feet natural Barberries Berberis species 1 to 5 feet natural or sheared Boxwood Species 2 to 4 feet natural or sheared Redosier dogwood (D) Cornus sericea 8 to 10 feet natural Burning bush (D) Euonymus alatus 6 to 15 feet natural Junipers (E) 8 to 15 feet natural Beautybush (D) Kolkwitzia amabilis 8 to 10 feet natural Spirea VanHoutte (D) 6 to 8 feet natural Lilacs (D) 4 to 15 feet natural Yews (E) Taxus species 2 to 10 feet natural or sheared Arborvitae (E) 3 to 15+ feet natural or sheared Arrowwood viburnum (D) Viburnum dentatum 6 to 8 feet natural American Cranberry (D) 8 to 12 feet natural

When you visit Highland Hill Farm at 5275 W Swamp Rd. (rt. 313) Fountainville Pa. we will be happy to show you these plants. You can also go to our web site http://www.seedlingsrus.com

A Fishy Road Trip in Cairns

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 10:45 pm

The Cairns Fishing Adventure
A Great Australia Road Trip

You love holidays? You love to fish? Then you’ll need to come to Cairns, Australia where the fishing is, quite simply, bloody fantastic.

You’ve got options coming out of your ears when you fish in Cairns on your next Great Australian Road Trip. It has almost every species of Pacific game fish in the blue waters near the reef. You can go fishing in the estuaries; you can go fishing in the rivers. You can go fishing offshore, onshore, and in sections of the reef. In fact, we can’t be sure if anyone does anything else up in Cairns. You can self drive at your own leisure, or hire out a charter and go on a great adventure, cashing in on local knowledge for all the best fishing spots.

The Cairns Plan
So, the plan is - fly into Cairns Airport and venture off in your new car rental to start hunting some cold-blooded scaley things. The mighty Black Marlin, the Barracuda, the Giant Trevally — they’re all lurking out there. Go get’em!

If you feel a little overwhelmed by the array of fishing alternatives before you, you can always start out locally. There’s some great fishing to be had at some of the northern beaches just a short drive from Cairns city.

Palm Cove is about 25 kilometres from the centre, Yorkeys Knob (and who could resist fishing somewhere called Yorkeys Knob?) is even closer. Or right in the centre you’ve got Barron River, where you can bag yourself all sorts of tropical river and estuarine fish.

The Serious Road Trip Begins
But why come all the way up to Cairns just to cling to her skirts and miss out on some excellent fishing spots further out? Get yourself a Cairns car hire and take a road trip to Australia’s ultimate fishing adventure.

Spectacular fishing, depending on the time of year, can also be had in the Russel Mulgrave river (40 kilometres south of Cairns) and the mighty Daintree river (just north of Port Douglas) which lines the Daintree National Park.

And if you’ve scored yourself a 4WD there’s nothing stopping you from fare-welling the beautiful and languid Port Douglas, after you’ve hauled in some beauties whilst floating about on the Daintree River, to burrow right on past Cooktown (good fishing there too surprise surprise) and into the wilds of Cape York.

Throw yourself about in the depths of surrounding national parks, like Cape Melville, Jardine River, Lakefield, and Iron Range. It’s at this point you may start considering staying up here, growing a very long beard and spending the rest of your life in a pair of short shorts.

No car in Cairns? Rent One!
Rental cars are available everywhere in Cairns. Try searching google for something like cairns car hire deals and you’ll be able to “snapper” up a cheap deal.

Drive Safe and Happy Fishing!

Fly Fishing For Fun!

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 4:07 am

Fly fishing is very different than fishing with a lure or worm type baits. The fly fisherman uses a artificial fly consisting of bites of feathers, foam, hide, fur, yarn, and other materials to be tried on to a hook that make it appealing to the type of fish you are catching. Every fly fisherman has his own type of flies he like to use some purchase them and then some of us like to tie our own. Fly tying is more of an art with basic training which most people can learn over a short period of time.

Dry fly fishing is the best classic form of fishing. The artificial fly is cast so that it floats on the surface of the water. As the fly passes over the fish it will rise to the surface and strike or take the fly.

With the fly rod you will attempt to stop the fish from spitting out the fly and get it tired enough so you can land it in your net. With fly fishing you will see all the action as you cast the fly and play the fish for a strike. The fly is very visible on the surface to the fish. You will see the fish take the fly on the surface however trout and other fish tend to feed under water so if you see the fish rising to the surface it is time to use a dry fly.

Wet flies will sink under the surface of the water an may be passed in front of the fish there bye causing the fish too strike at the fly,

Nymph fishing is very popular after the flies lay eggs on lakes or in streams and they hatch out as nymphs. As the nymphs make their way to the surface the fish will take them. When they get to the surface they will hatch into a flies.

When nymph fishing the imitation nymphs you us will be weighted to stay below the surface of the water. This will be far more of a challenge for you as the action all take place under the surface of the water and you will not be able to see if a fish is about to strike.

Most fish can be caught on a fly but the most common are trout, salmon, chars, and most game fish. In most areas the trout are the most popular and you will find them feeding mostly on small insects in shallow water. If you live on the coast you find salmon fishing with a fly rod a very rewarding challenge. Hooking a 30 or 40 pound salmon on a fly rod will give you a work out running up and down the beach trying to play the fish out to land it .

The fly fishing sport has gained ever increasing popularity over the years. Most will agree it just not about catching the fish but in the delivery of the fly and the skill and knowledge in the pursuit.

Some fly fisherman regard fly fishing as the holy grail of fishing. It is more relaxing and some say a better past time than golf. The sport of fly fishing see people from all walks of life. Some say it is more environmentally friends than the other type of fishing because it does less harm to the fish then other styles of fishing.

The art of fly fishing will get in to your blood and you will peruse the quite of the streams or the solitude of the ocean beaches to capture you prey. Most anglers will catch and release if they are fly fishing.

Grunion Runs - Fishing With Your Hands In San Diego

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 6:05 pm

Fishing is peaceful and inspiring sport regardless of the type of fishing your doing. Well, with one exception - grunion runs.

El Grunionino

Throughout the year, the fish known as the grunion run in San Diego and much of California. This little silver fish reproduces by “running” up the beach during the high tide in the middle of the night. Literally thousands of the fish simply come storming up the beach with the waves to lay their eggs in the wet sand. It kind of looks like the beginning of a triathalon except the participants are going the wrong way and are pregnant.

The fish picked up their name from Spanish settlers because of, well, the grunting noise the make when doing their thing. It is a bit saucy now that I think about it. Anyway, the grunion averages five inches in length and has a silvery hue that shows in the moonlight. With thousands in the water, it looks like the a really fat person wearing way to many sequins while dancing to disco music.

You’re Inner Barbarian

“Fishing” for grunion requires you to get in touch with your inner barbarian. Under California law, you are not allowed to use bait, hooks, poles, nets or anything. Instead, you must physically catch the grunion with your hands. This, of course, results in you and others running around the beach like a crab while trying to snatch the grunions. They are exceedingly quick and slippery. You’ll be huffing and puffing before you know it.

Grunion are an extremely plentiful fish, but there are still rules to follow. As mentioned above, you have to go mano-a-fisho. No poles, nets or other items can be used. Second, you have to get a fishing license from the California Department of Fish and Game. Third, you can only go grunion hunting from May to September, the legal season in the area.

If you think getting in touch with your inner fishing barbarian sounds like a good time, here is the scoop on good spots. In San Diego, you should hit the beaches in Del Mar, La Jolla, Mission Beach or in front of the Hotel Del Coronado. These are all high end areas, which means the grunion must have excellent taste.

Running around the beach like a madman can be tiring. Bringing along fluids [okay, beer] is highly recommended.

Carrying a Kayak

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 9:54 am

If you are going to be kayaking you’re going to need to be able to move your kayak when it is out of the water. You’ll need to move the kayak to and from the water, or from body of water to body of water. Here is a simple description of how to carry your kayak.

One Person - One Kayak

- Find the center of gravity in the kayak (usually where the seat is located) - To carry the kayak by yourself, place one edge of the inside of the cockpit on your shoulder so the kayak is hanging there. - Bend your knees while lifting and use your legs, not your back, to lift. - Stabilize the kayak on your shoulder with your hands. - Carry the kayak to where you need to go - Place the kayak down making sure you bend your knees.

Two People - Two Kayaks

A nice little trick you can use when you are going out with a buddy and have two boats to carry is to tie a paddle across the handles on each end of the kayaks. Tie the two front handles to each end of a paddle, then do the same with the rear handles.

Then have one person place the rear paddle across his shoulders and the same in the front. Carry to your put-in spot, then untie the boats and you’re on your way.

These are a couple methods to carrying a kayak. Simple yet efficient. One more thing…watch out for stumps and rocks!

Hiking Trails - Preserve Your Experiences

Filed under: House Of Recreation — @ 8:02 pm

Hiking is a great way to escape the rat race, get out in nature and leave the stress of the world behind. Alas, your hiking experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a hiking journal.

Hiking Journals

Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent hiking experience. What sticks out in your mind? Who did you go with and were there any incredible views? Now think about the first time you ever went hiking. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with and the particular hiking routes. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you keep a hiking journal, this won’t be the case.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your hiking experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.

A good hiking journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you don’t have to lug extra weight around. Second, it should have a case to protect it from the elements. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:

1. Who you went hiking with,

2. The length and difficulty of the hike,

3. Who you met and contact information for them,

4. The weather conditions,

5. Any unique things that occurred while hiking,

6. The routes you took on the hikes and alternatives you might want to try later.

7. Unique information about the particular hiking trail, and

8. Any inside information provided by locals or other climbers you met.

At the end of the hike, you should be able to get the following from your journal:

1. Contact information for other hikers you met,

2. Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you or they hike the location a second time.

3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and

4. Something to pass on to your friends, children and grandchildren.

To get the most out of your hiking journal, you should write in it just before you start, during breaks such as lunch and when you return. It is always interesting to see the different impressions you have before and after a hike as well as your mood changes as the hike progresses. On a miserably rainy day in winter, the journal will make for good reading

Hiking is a great way to commune with nature and spend a weekend. Make sure to preserve the experience with your hiking journal.
