Enjoy a variety of vegetables for healthy living

Filed under: Food Center — @ 6:07 am

Eating healthy is important for everyone, and one of the most
important keys to eating a better diet is eating more fruits and
vegetables. Many people are unsure how to use vegetables more
effectively as part of their diet, but it may be easier than you
think to provide yourself and your family with healthy,
nutritious meals at a great prices.

One way to create wonderful meals that are healthier than ever
is to take a stroll through the produce section of your local
grocery store. Most major grocery store chains have huge produce
sections, containing a wonderful variety of fruits and
vegetables from all corners of the world.

Trying a variety of different fruits and vegetables is a great
way to keep your meals interesting and exciting in addition to
nutritious. It is all too easy to become bored when trying to
follow a healthy diet, and boredom can lead people to abandon
their healthy habits. Avoiding diet burnout is important to the
long term survival of even the most sensible eating plan.

So if you’ve never had vegetables like collard greens, asparagus
or kale before, why not give them a try. Not only can trying new
things allow you to make great new discoveries, but it can
increase your level of fitness as well. Leafy green vegetables
like spinach, broccoli and kale are rich sources of many
important vitamins, minerals and micronutrients.

Another great way to increase the variety of vegetables you
enjoy is to combine fresh, frozen and canned vegetables. While
fresh vegetables are generally better and healthier, frozen and
canned vegetables can be great alternatives for when the fresh
varieties are out of season.

One of the best things about fresh fruits and vegetables is the
great variety of flavors, colors and textures available. Eating
a variety of different colored vegetables and fruits does much
more than provide much needed variety. It also provides a great
variety of nutrients. For instance, yellow and orange fruits and
vegetables tend to be very high in beta carotene, while green
leafy vegetables are often great sources of calcium and other
important nutrients. So why not spice up your plain old green
salad with a splash of color in the form of yellow peppers or
orange carrot slices?

Many people wrongly think that they can make up for a crappy
diet by using vitamin and mineral supplements. This mistaken
belief is apparently very widespread, since sales of these
supplements continue to break records.

When considering vitamin and mineral supplements, however, it is
important to remember that foods contain many different
minerals, trace elements and micronutrients. That means that for
every nutrient that has been discovered and synthesized, there
may be ten, twenty or more of these micronutrients that have yet
to be fully understood. That is why no vitamin supplement, no
matter how complete, can truly replace a healthy, balanced diet.

In addition, vitamin and mineral supplements are quite a bit
more expensive than a good selection of vegetables and fruits,
and not nearly as tasty.

When changing your diet and eating for a healthier lifestyle, it
is important to educate yourself about eating right, and go
choose the right fruits and vegetables for your tastes. After
all, the best diet is the one you can follow for the rest of
your life.

One of the best ways to start eating a healthy diet is to choose
the freshest fruits and vegetables. Not only do fresh fruits and
vegetables taste better, but they are less expensive and more
nutritious as well. Choosing a variety of in season fruits and
vegetables every week is a great way to enjoy healthy and varied
meals.

Of course your favorite fruits and vegetables will not always be
in season, so it will sometimes be necessary to supplement those
fresh fruits and vegetables with canned and frozen varieties.
When choosing canned fruits, try to avoid those packed in syrup;
choose canned fruits packed in fruit juice or water instead.
They will be healthier and contain less sugar.

Adding fresh fruit, such as apple slices, mandarin oranges,
nectarines and the like is a great way to make plain salads more
interesting and more delicious. Combining fruits and vegetables
is a great way to enhance your nutrition as well.

Saving Time With Your Microwave

Filed under: Food Center — @ 10:52 pm

The ubiquitous microwave oven is an appliance used daily, both at work and at home. And yet so few people possess the knowledge and skills necessary to reap the maximum productivity from this modern time-saving device.

Here are several tips for optimal microwave oven usage:

1. Reduce unnecessary key punching.

Are you one of those plebeians who still punches in 1-0-0 to heat an item for a minute or 1-3-0 for a minute and a half? Use 6-0 for 60 seconds and 9-0 for 90 seconds, and save yourself that extra digit. Learn to type two digits for anything up to 99 seconds. You’ll save time and also reduce wear and tear on your keypad.

2. Duplicate the same digit whenever possible.

Tip #1 was for newbies. The next skill to master is digit reuse so as to minimize finger movement over the keypad. Instead of typing 9-0 for 90 seconds, type 8-8. Instead of 6-0, use 5-5. You won’t miss those extra seconds, and you’ll save even more time.

3. If your microwave has a turntable, learn its rotational period.

How many times have you re-nuked your tea only to find that when you opened the microwave door, the teacup handle was oriented towards the rear, forcing you to reach awkwardly around the back to extract your beverage without burning yourself? The time lost in handle-hunting can be an order of magnitude greater than what you save on the keypad, so give top priority to learning the period of rotation of your turntable. When shopping for a new microwave, look for one with a rotational period of 5.5 or 11 seconds, since then your 5-5 and 8-8 nukes will always return the cooked item to its original orientation (i.e. handle facing out). But if you’re stuck with a less functional period of rotation and the handle always ends up facing the rear after your preferred nuke times, then learn to insert the cold mug with the handle facing the rear, so it will be facing outwards post-nuking. Of course, another solution is to buy two-handled mugs or teacups, which is fine if sophistication lacks appeal to you.

4. Multitask with multiple microwaves.

How many times have you had to wait for the microwave to finish one item before you nuke a second or third item, like reheating leftovers and then making a cup of tea? Surely you have better things to do than stand around soaking up radiation for 10 minutes. New microwave ovens can be bought for less than $50. You should have at least three stacked in your kitchen and at least one in every room of your home. Reheat leftovers for the entire family in minutes. Build your own nuke farm, and multi-nuke your way to faster meals for life. Just be sure not to blow a fuse by running too many other appliances at the same time.

By applying these tips, you could save yourself precious seconds per day, which over the course of a lifetime, should be more than enough to recoop the time spent learning them… unless, of course, you’re reading this on your deathbed, in which case you have my sincerest apologies (and my pity).

Next time: Why you should wear a wristwatch on each wrist (what if your non-watch hand happens to be closer to your face???)… PLUS determining optimal coaster placement.

London Restaurant Reviews

Filed under: Food Center — @ 10:04 pm

Hardens eating guide all began in the early 90’s it was noticed that London as an eating city had no Czech restaurant guidebooks at all. The idea was to design something which was handbag sized that the food loving public could use to help them to decide where is a good British modern restaurant to eat. More than 12 years ago the first London Vietnamese restaurant guide was distributed by hardens and has been a complete success ever since.

What makes Hardens so fantastic is that the London Restaurants are scored by the public, when the first ever restaurant guide was made available the restaurant enterprises was just starting to grow and with marvellous difficulty Hardens was able to ask around one hundred restaurant customers to take part in the first London wide survey. Over six hundred meals over a 9 month period were sold to make the Hardens Restaurant review guide what it is today.

Hardens have the distributed restaurant guides and now have an informative website. The informative website is easy to move around and will tell folk everything you need to know about pretty much any Polish restaurant in London and give you recommendations split into segments so it makes it easier for you to narrow down what it is that you are exactly looking for.

The enlightening website itself has lots of bits recommended on it, it is simple to digest and work your way through and this is thanks to the review guides excellent clear arrangement you can look up all the popular up and coming Scandinavian restaurants and of course reviews on them. This part is named Latest Reviews and is clearly placed on the beginning page of the food website where you can view the extensive list of afghani restaurants which changes every few day depending on what restaurant guides have been published. There is also an area down the right hand side of the hardens web page where customers can browse for perhaps a specific Egyptian restaurant or if you’re looking for a restaurant to go to in a specific area such as Newcastle and customers want to separate the brilliant ones for the ghastly restaurants this will do the job brilliantly for you. If you’re looking for UK Restaurant Reviews, check out Hardens.

Brewing A Perfect Cup Of Coffee

Filed under: Food Center — @ 9:52 pm

Brewing a great cup of coffee depends on a number of things such as the quality of the coffee bean, the quality of the water being used, the type of brewing being done, and the grind of the coffee. Now quality of bean and water is something you can easily take care. Just use good quality beans and pure water. However the relationship between the grind of the coffee and the type of brewing being done is more detailed and could use a little explanation. Now we all know that we make coffee by passing hot water over crushed coffee beans. However for it to really work well we need to understand just how long the water should be passing over the beans. The purpose of this article is to help you understand how to match your coffee’s grind to the type of brewing you are doing in order to make the best coffee possible.

Generally speaking, the ’soaking’ time relates directly to how coarse the coffee is ground. This means that smaller coffee grinds need less contact with the water, and coarser grinds need longer contact. Espresso coffee is only exposed to water for 20-40 seconds and as a result is made using extremely fine grind coffee. A French press coffee maker can take as much as 4 minutes and uses an extremely coarse grind. If coffee is left contacting water for too long for its grind size, unwanted extracts emerge and make the coffee taste bitter. Of course if the grind is too large and the water passes very quickly (like using frech press grind in an espresso maker), very little of the caffeine and flavours extracted and will have poor flavour.

Of course filters play an important role in managing the balance between over and under brewing your coffee. Not only do they keep the grind out of your cup, but they also control how fast the water passes over the grinds. Paper filters are the most common, but many people are also using metal varieties. Paper filters are quite good. However they can absorb some of the coffee flavour, and some people claim they can taste the paper in the final coffee. Metal filters are normally made from stainless steel or gold plated mesh. They have very fine weave and filter out the coffee grinds very well. They also do not alter the taste of the coffee at all. Metal filters are also more environmentally friendly than the paper alternative.

Whichever you choose, be sure to buy decent quality. Cheap filters often clog or not allow the coffee to brew properly. A decent quality metal filter will last years and save money in the end.

Brewing a cup of coffee is not that hard. Brewing a great cup takes a little more understanding, but isn’t any harder. Start with fresh beans and good clean water and then match your brewing style to the proper grind and then mess around with the exact proportions and pretty soon your be brewing killer coffee every time.
