Climber from Nepal, 74, oldest man to scale Chomolungma or Mount Everest

Filed under: Adventure, School of Travel, Sports Info — @ 9:26 am

Further, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Andrew Brash with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. More than 3020 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of the Mount Everest. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Sherchan just 11 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the mountain and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. “Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma or Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism. This year Anthony Loeff the French mountaineer is reporting the scales for Chomolungma after reaching the top of earlier this season.

Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Andrew Brash returned a hero to Calgarians. He was reported in good health as he began making his descent. “The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on the mountain. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though the mountain is shared by two countries. The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Mt Everest. His first found him within 159 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Three years later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Everest to finish what he had started.

Now that Andrew Brash has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. Nevertheless, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the mountain could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused

Jogging for Fitness

Filed under: Sports Info — @ 1:23 pm

Most runners should train the same way that competitive runners do, even if they jog only for fitness. Here’s a program that you can follow even if you do not plan to compete. First get a physical exam to assure that you are healthy. Then start out by running every other day until your legs feel tired or hurt. Gradually work up to the point where you can run for thirty continuous minutes.

Then start your training program. Plan one fast and one long workout a week. The other workouts should be at a slower pace and can be skipped if you feel tired. Your fast run can be on Wednesday and your long run on Sunday. Wednesdays, start out slowly and gradually increase the pace until you start to feel uncomfortable as you breathe hard and your muscles start to hurt. Slow down until you recover and gradually pick up the pace again. Repeat until your legs start to feel heavy.

Each week try to improve by spending more time running fast and less time running slow. Take the next day, Thursday, off because your legs will be sore. On Friday and Saturday, jog slowly a short distance. On Sunday, try to run for 30 minutes, and each week, extend the time running until you can stay out for 60 to 90 minutes or more of brisk running. Take the next day off. Then jog slowly on Tuesday and try to run fast again on Wednesday. The same principles can be applied to any endurance sport you use for fitness, such as cycling, rowing or swimming.

Golf the real thing

Filed under: Sports Info — @ 3:44 am

The grass is always greener on the other side. Not as green as I felt on the inside the day I decided to check out this golf lark.
I could never get my head around why all the excitement and fuss at the sheer mention of the word golf.

Off to the local driving range I did go, selected myself a golf club and purchased a token for fifty golf balls..Maybe if I had more knowledge on the game, I would have realized the importance of choosing the right size golf club.

Inserting my token into the slot to collect the golf balls. What a nightmare. Well? no one told me to place a basket underneath the shoot. Those balls came flooding out like Niagra falls. I hasten to add these balls did not roll they bounced. Some even higher than me, cursed they were without a doubt.
Doomed from the start, a golf stick to suit Shrek and only twenty balls of my fifty. The rest for all I know could be in Timbukto.
I remember more misses than hits but I was slowly beginning to like and enjoy this so called golf lark.

Why not try the real thing? a voice called out from the cubicle next to me. Is this not the real thing I asked. No mate, came the reply. You need to be on a course.

Determined to find out why this sport is so popular. I went in search of a course to play the real thing.
Found myself a course with eighteen holes. Now for the real thing.

Taking the first shot and not taking my eyes of the ball, I watched it rotate in and around several humps down a funnel and then swirl in and out of a maze of curves. Bit like the krypton factor but I was desperate to find out about the real thing.
It is 5pm and we are closing the attendant called out. But I am only on hole number three I explained. I am sorry sir, why not come back tommorrow? and that I did for the next fornight. Because that is how long it took me to finish this particular course.

Pedro (The Attendant) and I had struck up a friendly relationship in all the time I was going back and to. I am afraid Pedro this golf lark is not for me.
Senor this is crazy golf, it is not the real thing. What is the difference I asked. I will need to show you senor? he answered.

Pedro explained that he had a few friends that he would like me to meet up with. He also went onto say that they could help me in my quest to find out what the major attraction in golf is for many thousands of people.

What lovely people Pedro’s friends were. Very informative on the game.Oh and boy oh boy, they sure showed me a few tricks of the trade.
It is was all falling into place now.
Knowing all the rules simplified and made this game more understanding.

Yes? I was loving this new found sport that was to change my whole way of life for the rest of my life.

It was time to leave so I thanked everyone for their expert guidance. Now over to my good friend Pedro, who I grabbed with so much force giving him such a manly hug and shaking his hand at the same time. I could not thank him enough for his time and patience. It was a pleasure Senor, Pedro replied. By the way I did not quite catch your name senor.
Just call me TIGER.

Hitting Down on the Ball

Filed under: Sports Info — @ 3:57 pm

Golfers need to understand that in order to create backspin, trajectory and distance control the ball MUST be hit in a downward motion. To do this the club shaft MUST be leaning forward at Impact!

The average 5 iron has 8 degrees of forward built into it. If you look at Impact pictures of your player you will see that the hands are well forward of the clubhead and the shaft is, on an average, leaning forward 15 degrees! They have effectively turned the 5 iron into a 3 or 4 iron. No wonder these players hit the ball so far!

The average player however, has a backward leaning shaft at Impact turning that same 5 iron into a 7 or 8! Have you ever played golf with someone that always complained that ALL of their clubs go the same distance? Having the shaft lean backward at Impact is one of the major causes of “power leakage.”

This means that the hands have to lead through Impact…not the clubhead!

The dimensions of the down stroke are always three dimensional, just as the back stroke works in three dimensions. These are downward, outward and forward.

Hitting down creates backspin which creates lift!

Hitting up produces almost all topped shots!

Bringing in the Big Browns

Filed under: Sports Info — @ 11:27 pm

Although the brown trout is widely distributed, it is
considered by many fly fishermen the ultimate challenge. This is
due mainly to its secrecy and unpredictability. These provide
constant challenges to anglers.

Brown trout can be found in
rivers and natural stillwaters. Time of day will factor into the
feeding pattern of this trout. Low light conditions will cause
the trout to seek shallows, margins and thin water. Harsh light
tends to drive it into undercut banks, deep pools and deeper
areas in lakes.

Also, look out for brown trout around
obstructions such as tree roots and fence lines. In addition,
the species tends to prefer drab, insect-oriented patterns. It
is wise to use smaller rather than bigger flies and pay
attention to presentations, using as fine a leader as possible.

Preferred Flies: For Spring Creek fishing use the
Flashback Pheasant Tail or Blue Dun (or Pale Blue Dun).
In the Freestone Stream, one can win with the Parachute
Hare’s Ear or the Bead Head Stonefly Black
. For Stillwater
fishing, the Mink Zonker proves very successful.
