Cheap Countertops and Capitalism

A fast growing industry nowadays is the branch of cheap kitchen countertops and sinks. If you browse the internet and type the word cheap countertops you will find more than one hundred pages worth of cheap countertops. That is because many smart business people have taken matters into their own hands. With globalization and also monopoly of big furniture manufacturers have made it hard for the consumer to choose affordable countertops when options are limited. With the advent of small business supplying cheap countertops that problem has been much eliminated and allowing the consumer to have much more options when it comes to buying countertops.

This is a great example of how capitalism works. In a capitalist environment you are able to work hard and build your own business. People are thankful for having more choices to choose from. In communist countries for example, sales is much more standardized and standing out is not an option if not a political violation. Therefore uniqueness in those countries is rarely seen. Another advantage of cheap countertops is its easy adaptability to an ever growing population. People move nowadays much more than in the past which calls for replacing furniture and countertops for that matter much more often.

Keys To A Successful Home Renovation Project

Filed under: Universe Of Home Improvement — @ 11:11 am

Contemplating some home improvements? Whether it is a small project or a major renovation there are two primary keys to success:

1. Planning: Have you considered what disruption the project will have on you and your family’s day to day ability to function? As an example, laying some ceramic tile on the bathroom floor may take the bathroom out of service for two days. In a one bathroom home this could prove to be a major obstacle to any bathroom renovation. Kitchen renovation can also cause complexities if major appliances have to be temporarily moved, besides the necessity to make sure floor surfaces are not damaged while providing a temporary relocation, refrigerators need to be powered. Even a small project such as repainting a room can create major inconveniences because of furniture relocation and paint odors.

Always make a list of material and tools that you will require, before starting the project. Then make sure you know where the tools and material (the material that you believe you already have is) are, collect them, verify that they are useable and then place them all in a convenient location so that you can find them when you need them.

2. Knowledge: Whether you are going to do the project yourself or hire a contractor, knowledge is the second key to ensuring that the job will be completed to your satisfaction. Invest some time in learning about the materials that you are going to use and the tools needed to install them. Believe it or not the manufacturers of the materials and products that you are going to use know more about them than you do. If a manufacturer says allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours before applying the grout, don’t apply the grout in 12 hours. If a manufacturer says that his flooring needs to acclimatize in your home for 72 hours before installation, don’t bring it home and immediately start installing it.

If you are hiring a contractor you must check his references and you must understand what material he is intending on using. There are vast differences in quality levels of materials. If a contractor says he will install an oak plank hardwood floor, there are many questions to ask about the grade, dimensions and finish of the material. Prices can vary from $2.00 to $15.00 a sq. ft.

Proper planning and knowledge will make a big difference in the overall success and satisfaction with your next home improvement or renovation project.

Memory foam sleep benefits

Will memory foam mattress become as popular as spring mattresses? I believe that they will not. At first, the cost of a buying a memory foam mattress was considered too high by many consumers.

It is often thought that a person who likes the feel of their springy coil mattress, but wants less motion transfer or has a problem with the feel of the springs underneath, will find a latex or memory foam foam mattress the best of both worlds. One thing you should be aware of is that once you own your latex or memory foam mattress, you will not want to sleep anywhere else but at home, so spoil yourself if you will, but please don’t say we didn’t warn you. While overexposure from natural latex gloves have caused a small percentage of medical workers to become allergic to latex, many of the latex mattresses use a composite that takes out the natural latex proteins and seems to render the resulting latex foam hypo-allergenic.

It’s true that fads come and go, but every once in a while something comes along that is revolutionary. If you suffer from back problems, sleep disorders, you toss and turn or you just want a fantastic night’s sleep every night, a memory foam mattress or a latex foam mattress may be just what you need. Those are just two examples of mattresses made of foam available to you. When something like this comes along, far from being a passing fad, they are responsible for a new dawn - the next leap in technology. Without doubt, the memory foam mattress is revolutionary and is here to stay giving many people, the world over, a better night’s sleep.

Don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson questions, such as the different categories of polyurethane foam and the difference that could make for you. Foam density levels also make a difference, so it’s mostly a matter of trying as many out as you can, and finding which one most appeals to you. Here’s to a better night’s sleep.

Downstairs With Farmer Tom

Filed under: Universe Of Home Improvement — @ 12:02 am

A reader wrote:

My wife and I have been building our house for just over three years now. We moved in on Nov.30, a year ago, and at that time there wasn’t a single sheet of drywall up; all of it was in piles on the floor. The breakfast area in the kitchen didn’t have the sloped glass installed, so we ate under a blue plastic tarp that leaked when it rained…

This reminded me of a rather large farming family who built a house on the prairie, near the North Dakota border (yeah, pretty desolate). I guess it was 1970 or so, about 180 miles south-east of Regina on a flat part of the flat part… not a living stick of wood for miles around… They dug a hole in the ground, and then every able-bodied family member, friend and neighbour pitched in to help lay the concrete blocks.

They dug the well, built the floor and basement stairs, roughed in the plumbing, heating and electrical - and then ran out good weather and almost out of money (bad crop year). Well, says old Tom (the father), we always wanted a finished basement! So, for not too much more, they built a basement rec-room, bathroom and kitchenette. That’s where they lived for two years!

Basement apartment!

Well, when the snow drifted and the prairie looked more like sub-arctic than temperate, was that house ever hard to find! The school bus driver said he had to check his mileage, stop along the road, and wait for the kids to pop out of the snow bank!
